No. 2 Baseball Takes Down No. 4 Widener; Will Play for MAC Commonwealth Title on Saturday

YORK, Pa. – Senior Mike Boulanger picked up a critical win for No. 2 Arcadia baseball Friday afternoon against No. 4 Widener, 5-2. The Knights will play for the MAC Commonwealth Title on Saturday.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • Arcadia advances to 28-12 overall.
  • Widener dips to 21-18 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After the Pride started the game with a run in the top of the first, the Knights responded in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game. Senior Nick Cardace doubled down the left field line, driving in junior Bryan Gillen from second.
  • Widener scored again in the top of the second, regaining the lead, 2-1. Arcadia came back in the fifth, scoring two runs to take a 3-2 lead. Gillen started the scoring efforts off with a double down the left field line, scoring freshman Matt Ernst from first. Junior Luke Hohenstein was up next, singling through the left side to score Gillen from second.
  • After a few scoreless innings, the Scarlet and Grey added two in the eighth, as junior Phil Pierfy rocked a double to right center, allowing Cardace to score from first. Two batters later, freshman Brett Moyer had a pinch-hit RBI single to right field, plating Pierfy from second.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Cardace led the team with two hits, going 2-for-4 on the afternoon with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Six other Knights registered a hit, with four registering an RBI.
ON THE MOUND:
  • Junior Joel Bartoni got the nod on the hill, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits, and two runs, with one earned.
  • Boulanger (6-1) came on in relief, picking up the win. He went 4.1 innings, with four strikeouts, allowing just one hit.
UP NEXT:
  • Alvernia plays No. 3 Hood in an elimination game at 3 p.m. today. The winner will play an elimination game against No. 4 Widener at 7 p.m. tonight. The Knights will face the winner of the 7 p.m. game tomorrow at noon.
