Pierfy Leads Baseball Past No. 3 Hood in Opening Game of MAC Commonwealth Championship; Will Take on No. 4 Widener Friday

YORK, Pa. – Junior Phil Pierfy led the No. 2 Arcadia baseball team Thursday night with three RBIs, taking down No. 3 Hood, 13-5. The Knights will take on No. 4 Widener at 11 a.m. Friday morning.
 
FOR THE RECORD:
  • Arcadia moves to 27-12 overall.
  • Hood dips to 29-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Pierfy started the efforts, drawing a walk with the bases loaded, forcing junior Bryan Gillen to score. Senior Drew Coisson was up next, singling to drive in junior Sean Carew. Sophomore Tyler Wisnewski drew a walk as the next batter, forcing senior Nick Cardace to score. The Knights finished their first inning scoring efforts as junior Nick Ponente grounded into a double play, however Coisson came in safely.
  • Arcadia bolstered its lead in the fifth through eighth innings, plating at least one run in each. In the fifth, Carew reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing freshman Matt Ernst to score.
  • After Hood scored two in the sixth, the Scarlet and Grey responded in the bottom half, scoring three runs to go up, 8-2. The scoring started when junior Luke Hohenstein walked with the bases loaded, advancing Ponente home. Carew was up next, reaching on a fielder's choice and driving Ernst in. Cardace was due up next, singling up the middle, allowing Gillen to touch home.
  • Arcadia plated another two runs in the seventh as Gillen hit a two-run single down the right field line, scoring Wisnewski and Coisson.
  • The Blazers tallied a run in the top of the eighth, before the Knights added three insurance runs in the bottom half. Pierfy drove a pitch to right center for a two-run double with Cardace and Carew coming in. Four batters later, freshman Brett Moyer reached on an error by the shortstop, advancing Pierfy home.
  • Hood attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs, however the Knights buckled down to take the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Pierfy went 1-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, and a run scored.
  • Coisson ended the day 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored.
  • Gillen joined the hit parade, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Cardace was another multi-hit performer, going 2-for-3, driving in a run and scoring twice.
  • Ernst rounded out the multi-hitters, with a 2-for-5 day, scoring two runs.
ON THE MOUND:
  • Senior Jake Lloyd (2-1) had a solid performance on the hill, pitching 7.2 innings, striking out three batters, while allowing three runs, two earned runs, and five hits.
  • Sophomore Mitch Blake came on in relief, closing out the final 1.1 innings with a strike out and two earned runs.
UP NEXT:
Arcadia takes on No. 4 Widener, after the Pride took down No. 1 Alvernia, 17-4. Widener took the regular season series, 2-1 over the Knights, including a 10-9 extra inning battle. The Knights lone win of the series came in game three, 4-1. In the win, sophomore pitcher Robert Lichtenberger had a strong performance, tossing 4.1 innings allowing just one unearned run on two hits while striking out five. Senior Mike Boulanger picked up his third save of the year in 2.2 innings of relief as he struck out one and did not allow a hit.
